The journey that led me to major in Strategic Communications.
When I was little, I used to love making and editing YouTube videos on my mom's iPad, writing poems, and making art. I've also always loved writing and the art of persuasion. Overtime, however, the world convinced me that the only practical careers were to be a doctor or a lawyer.I believed the lie that I would have to pick one of these in order to live a successful life.
Upon graduating high school, I had absolutely no clue what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go. I took a gap year, and I entered college a year later as a Government major. At the same time, I kept finding myself being placed in positions that centered around communications and social media management.
I didn't know it at the time, but I was starting to cultivate a love for communicating through social media, but never considered this as a career option.
It took a field trip to realize that I felt out of place in my major. One of my friends exclaimed, "isn't this so cool!?", and I had to honestly admit that I wasn't finding as much excitement or interest in touring the Virginia state capital as everyone else.
I had to be honest with myself in coming to the conclusion that I just wouldn't find my purpose in politics and policy. I feel much more compelled to communicate truths boldly in a way that I allows me to express my creativity and passion about the various areas of interest that I have.
Sometimes it takes more than one try to find the right major.
If I had told 18-year-old me that I would major in Strategic Communications, I wouldn't have even known that it existed or what that would entail. It was through the encouragement of people around me and the whisper of God to trust Him that I was able to change my major and step into the unknown with confidence.
