Social media often gets a bad rap. It can make us distracted, cause us to envy each other and procrastinate on important tasks. But what if we saw social media as a tool instead?
As a Christian in strategic communications, I often find myself trying to find the balance between viewing social media as a hinderance versus a benefit to society. I think social media is what you make of it. As for me, I want to use social media to strategically communicate the gospel of Jesus.
Strategic communication is about communicating a purposeful message with a specific desired outcome for a target audience.
What if we applied this definition directly to evangelism? It would be like this: evangelism is about communicating the gospel in a purposeful way in order to create disciples and help people to know Jesus, which can look different depending on the audience.
On social media, this might look like having a particular way of sharing the love of Jesus to young adults (a specific target audience). Just like you can't craft a message strategically without having a target audience, the same goes with sharing the gospel.
I believe too many people have a one size fits all approach when it comes to evangelism. If every person is unique, the way we approach each gospel conversation should also be unique.
If social media has the power to reach millions of people in a moment, why as Christians would we neglect the potential it has to bring millions to Jesus?
Strategically communicating the gospel is essential in the Kingdom!
